Horses to Watch

Horses to Watch

August 16, 2017

Horses to Watch is a new and regular feature of HorseRacingFLA.  We have two types of watches.

1 – A horse that is running today at a Florida track.  We will leave it to you to decide whether and how to include the horse in your bets. We will follow up with results and our analysis of what went right or wrong.

2 – A horse that ran well in a recent race, in some cases despite a troubled trip, and might be worth a wager in its next race.  We will keep you posted on when the horse is entered next for a race.

Gulfstream Park is dark today. On Thursday, we will have one or more horses to watch on that day’s race card.

For an upcoming race, here is a horse to watch from the past weekend at Gulfstream.

*American Halo – this 2-YO filly finished a fast-closing second in Sunday’s eighth race at Gulfstream on Sunday, in a $50,000 MSW race at one mile on turf.

In three career starts for trainer Mark Casse, this daughter of 2001 Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos has two seconds and one fourth place finish in MSW races.

On Sunday, she was off slowly and was ninth and last before she and Tyler Gaffalione began a move entering the turn.  Although forced to steady slightly in mid-stretch, she came in second by a length to first-time starter Queen Rose.

The winning time was 1:37.54 on the course listed as firm.  American Halo earned an Equibase Speed Figure of 74, topping her previous best of 67.

American Halo was bred in Kentucky and is out of the Sky Mesa mare Miss Sky.  American Halo is a homebred of John Oxley, who owned Monarchos and the two-time graded stakes winner Sky Mesa.
