Edwin Gonzalez Returns to Riding Saturday; Zayas Holds Lead in Jockey Standings

Edwin Gonzalez will return to riding at Gulfstream Park on Saturday after being sidelined seven weeks with a hairline fracture in his right leg.

Gonzalez (photo on home page)sustained that injury in a race at Gulfstream on July 3.

Gonzalez is scheduled to ride in five races on Saturday. Gulfstream will have twelve races with first post at 12:20  p.m. 

The injury interrupted a very successful first meet for Gonzalez at Gulfstream. Despite missing twenty days, he is in fourth place in wins with 59.

Saturday is the 73rd day of Gulfstream’s spring/summer meet which is scheduled to have 92 days and end on  Sept. 26.

Gonzalez is a 29-year-old native of Puerto  Rico.

He led jockeys in wins at Penn National in  Grantville, Pa., in 2019 and 2020.

Gulfstream Meet  Leaders

Through Friday, Edgard Zayas leads the spring/summer meet jockey standings with 100 wins.

Emisael Jaramillo is second with 97  wins and Miguel Vasquez is third with 77 wins.

Zayas rode three winners on Friday and is listed on mounts in eight races on Saturday.  Jaramillo  rode one winner on Friday and is listed on mounts in ten races on Saturday.  Vasquez rode two winners on Friday and is listed on mounts in eleven races on Saturday.

Gulfstream’s 2020 spring/summer meet had 107 race days. Zayas won the jockey championship  with 137 victories and was followed by Vasquez with 127 and Jaramillo with 120.
