Gulfstream Weekend: Sire Stakes Series Starts; Big Rainbow 6 Payout Possible on Saturday

HRFLA Staff Report

After being dark for four days, Gulfstream Park will resume racing on Friday with ten races and first post of 2:00 p.m.

On Saturday, Gulfstream  will have the first two races in this year’s Florida Sire Stakes series for Florida bred 2-year-olds that meet a series of eligibility requirements.

Another possible Gulfstream highlight on Saturday is an “all must go” mandatory payout  of the entire jackpot on the Rainbow 6. If Gulfstream has that payout, betting on the Rainbow 6 probably will be at least $2.5 million.

The jackpot consists of the entire carryover plus 80 percent of the day’s Rainbow 6 bets.

On “mandatory days,” Gulfstream pays out the jackpot no matter the number of tickets with the most winning horses (usually six) in the Rainbow 6.

On days without a mandatory pay, Gulfstream pays out the jackpot only if there is just one ticket with the winners of all six Rainbow 6.

On non-mandatory days when there are multiple tickets with the most winning horses (usually  six), Gulfstream takes out 20 percent of the day’s Rainbow 6 bet. It then divides 56 percent among tickets with the most winners and adds 24 percent to the carryover.

Whether Gulfstream has a mandatory  payout on Saturday will depend on what happens Friday in the Rainbow 6.

The Rainbow 6 will have will have a carryover of $458,914.

The 20 cents per combination-only bet will be on races five to ten, with the sequence scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.

The carryover has been growing because Gulfstream has gone twelve straight race days without the jackpot payoff requirement of just one ticket with all six winners. If the Rainbow 6 is hit by a single ticket on Friday, it will take down the carryover. In that case, Gulfstream will start a new Rainbow  6 pool on Saturday.

If there are multiple winning tickets on Friday, the carryover will grow again (probably to about $500,000), and Gulfstream will have a mandatory Rainbow 6 payout.

Gulfstream wagering history indicates that the guaranteed payout of that large a carryover probably will attract between $2,5 million and $3 million in Rainbow 6 bets.

On Saturday, Gulfstream will have thirteen races with first  post at  12:20 p.m.

The Rainbow 6 will be on races eight to  thirteen with the sequence scheduled to start at 3:47 p.m.

The series is sponsored by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association (FTBOA), That Ocala-based organization is joined by Gulfstream and the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (FHBPA) in providing purse money for the series.
