Gulfstream Championship Meet Opens with Huge Fields

Gulfstream Park race course opened it’s 2018-2019 Championship meet Saturday, amid Clear-Firm conditions, 11 races, and huge racing fields.

132 starters competed for $1.23 million in purses. Total betting handle was $13.61 million, a nice pop over the $11.9 million wagered on the 2017 opening.

Four races evidenced 14 starters each (3 dirt and one turf) with the high-odds of the day winning two of them; 17:1 and 36:1 in races 6 and 11 respectively. The late multiple race wagers paid off big with those odds mentioned, and the huge fields.

The late Pick 5 paid $20,128, the Pick 4 paid $6,652 and the Rainbow 6 paid $5,117 to 10 winning tickets.
To wit: the Rainbow 6 had 76 starters – the highest that we can recall searching our database.
Just four favorites won their races Saturday. The Rainbow is the sole carryover Sunday at $21,932 with a listed 75 starters.

Trainer Jorge Navarro was a big winner Saturday, saddling the winner of three Claiming Crown races – Aztec Sense in the $200,000 Jewel, Misschief Maas in the $110,000 Glass Slipper and Salsa’s Return in the $110,000 Iron Horse.

First post time will be 12:35 PM Sunday, and no stakes races are planned.
Good Luck !
