Plan for  Gunnevera: Gulfstream, Then Travers

HorseRacingFLA Staff Report

Gunnevera has been working sharply as he continued preparations for the Travers Stakes (Grade 1), to be run Aug. 26 at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The Antonio Sano trainee breezed five furlongs in 59.60 seconds Saturday morning at Calder (Gulfstream Park West) The workout was the fastest of the day at that distance at Calder and was the third straight bullet workout for Gunnevera.

The Travers is 1 1/4 miles on dirt for 3-year-olds and is often called “the Summer Derby”.

Gunnevera, a son of Dialed In, has been one of 2017’s top 3-year-olds. His record includes a victory in the Fountain of Youth (Grade 2) at 1 1/16 miles on March 4 at Gulfstream Park.

Gunnevera has not raced since May 20 when he finished fifth in the Preakness (Grade 1) at Pimlico in Baltimore.

Sano said he hopes to get Gunnevera into a race at Gulfstream prior to the Travers.

“We will look for a race at Gulfstream first and then the Travers,” Sano said.

“He won’t run in the Jim Dandy”.

The 1 1/8 mile Jim Dandy (Grade 2) will be run July 29 at Saratoga.
