GP West: Wednesday Preview

HorseRacingFLA Staff Report

The Gulfstream Park West meet will have an eight-race card on Thursday, with first post at 12:35 p.m.

The dirt track is listed as fast and the turf is listed as firm at Calder, the site of the GP West meet. The first, fourth, sixth and eighth races are scheduled for turf with the portable rail at twenty feet.

The Weather Channel forecast is for a chance of rain ranging from zero to ten percent during racing hours.

All of Wednesday’s races will be claiming or maiden claiming.

But there is the attraction of two carryovers.

*$10,570 on the Rainbow 6, on races three through eight

$1,753.03 om the Super Hi-5 for the first race

The carryovers follow Tuesday’s eighth and final race, won by 76-1 shot Alawena.

That resulted in no winning tickets on the Super Hi-5, which requires picking the first five finishers in correct order.

Alawena’s win also was a main reason there were no tickets with the winners of all six races in the Rainbow 6 sequence.

So, meet sponsor Gulfstream Park  made its “non jackpot” payoff to the 61 tickets  that had five winners.  Each received $93.60.

The carryover was expanded from $8,115 to $10,570.

We will have coverage during the afternoon on our blog.

Tuesday Results

Miss Away extended her winning streak to three as she beat Formal Class by 1 ¼ lengths in Tuesday’s fourth and feature race at the GP West meet.

Miss Away, a five-year-old mare, won the seven-furlong allowance in 1:23.27 on the dirt track listed as fast.  She was the 3-5 favorite in a five-horse field. Marcos Meneses rode Miss Away for trainer Yandri Pena.

Saturday Stakes

The fields and post positions will be announced Wednesday afternoon for the seven stakes races that will be run at GP West on Saturday.

All have $100,000 purses and are restricted to Florida-breds.

The card is billed as Millions Preview Day because three of the races are at similar distances to richer stakes races that will be run at Gulfstream on the Jan. 21 Sunshine Millions card.
