Belmont: Preview of Afternoon Coverage

By Jim Freer

This afternoon on this Web site and on our blog we will post our analysis, selections and recommended bets for the Belmont Stakes (Grade 1).

Post time for the 1 ½ mile Belmont is6:37 p.m. Eastern.

We will attempt to continue the handicapping success that we have had this year with the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

For the Derby on May 7, we recommended $78 in bets.  They paid $95.25 for a 22 percent return on investment.

For the Preakness, we recommended $64 in bets. They paid $99.35, for a 55 percent return on investment.

In both races, our wins included the trifecta via a part wheel.

In the Preakness, we had Cherry Wine at 17-1, as one of the horses in the second leg. He came in second between Exaggerator (photo on home page) and Nyquist.

In the Belmont as in the two previous Triple Crown races, we will use a “betting on a budget” strategy

It is a hedge strategy designed for a racing fan who doesn’t want to spend more than $25 or so on a  big race but still wants to have exacta and tri bets that include favorites as well as some longer shots.

We recommend that such fans pool their betting money with a friend or relative, or several, and team up for bets in the $60 to $100 range.
