Friday, Oct. 16–Tyler Gaffalione rode three winners at the Gulfstream Park West meet on Thursday, expanding his lead to four over Edgard Zayas in the jockey standings.
Gaffalione has 13 victories after eight days of the meet that Gulfstream Park is holding at Calder. Zayas had no wins on Thursday, and has nine for the meet. Jonathan Gonzales rode one winner on Thursday and is third in the standings.
Zayas and Gaffalione will continue their rivalry today at GP West. First post is 1:15 p.m. for the ten-race card, with no stakes races.
Zayas will have a chance to narrow the gap or maybe take the lead during the next three days, when he has 22 scheduled mounts and Gaffalione has 11 at GP West.
Zayas has nine mounts today, six on Saturday and seven on Sunday.
Gaffalione has five GP West mounts today and six on Sunday.
On Saturday, he will be at Laurel Park in Laurel, Md., where he has two mounts on that track’s Maryland Million Day card.
Gaffalione, 21, is a native of South Florida. Until this past Sunday, he had a five-pound apprentice weight allowance in non-stakes race.
He finished ninth in wins at last year’s GP West meet. He led jockeys in wins at this year’s Gulfstream Park spring and summer meets.
Zayas, 22, is a native of Puerto Rico. He led jockeys in wins at last year’s GP West meet.
Zayas missed parts of this year’s Gulfstream spring and summer meets with injuries. He finished third in wins at the spring meet and fourth in the summer meet.
The 41-day GP West meet will conclude on Nov. 29. The Gulfstream Park 2015-2016 championship meet will begin Dec. 5.
* Trainer Juan Arias had two winners on Thursday, giving him three victories in five starts for the meet and putting him in a six-way tie at the top of the standings.
The other trainers with three wins are Todd Pletcher, Ralph Nicks, Gustavo Delgado, Marcus Vitali and Rodolfo Garcia.
Arias’s winners were Metz (11-1) in the third race and My Summer Bird (6-1) in the eighth race,
* Aoleon, at 7-2, won Thursday’s tenth and final race and only two Rainbow 6 ticket holders had that horse. The payout was $6,059.64.
There is a carryover of $7,747 today. The Rainbow 6 is a 20 cent-only bet per combination and requires picking the winners of the day’s last six races.
