Gulfstream Weekend: Rainbow 6 Carryover Tops $500,000; Florida Sire Stakes on Saturday

HorseracingFLA Staff Report

Wednesday, Sept. 2 — Gulfstream Park will begin a five-day holiday racing weekend this afternoon.

Gulfstream is usually dark on Mondays. But it will have a Labor Day card this coming Monday Sept. 7. Gulfstream will not have racing next Thursday Sept. 10.

This Saturday, Gulfstream will have six stakes races including the second legs of the four divisions in the Florida Sire Stakes series.

First posts this weekend will be 1:15 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

There are no stakes races on Thursday’s ten-race card. But there is the attraction of a Rainbow 6 carryover that has grown to $509,085 over the last seven weeks.

The Rainbow 6 is a 20-cent-only per combination bet on each day’s last six races.

On Thursday it will be on the fifth through tenth races. On Thursday morning, we will look at several of those races in our new “Horses to Watch” handicapping feature.

Gulfstream pays out the full Rainbow 6 pool (day’s bets plus carryover) only on days when there is just one ticket with all six winners.

On other days, after the 20 percent takeout, Gulfstream divides 70 percent of the day’s Rainbow 6 bets among the multiple winning tickets and puts 30 percent into the carryover.

Basically, on multiple winner days, 56 percent of the day’s new Rainbow 6 bets is distributed among winning tickets and 24 percent goes into the next day’s carryover.

It is likely that between $100,000 and $150,000 will be bet on the Rainbow 6 on Thursday. In that case, the payoff could be around $650,000 if there is just one ticket with all six winners. If there are multiple winning tickets, they will divide somewhere between $60,000 and $100,000 from the day’s pool.

The Rainbow 6 carryover has been growing since July 16. That was 27 Gulfstream race days ago, and the last day on which there was just one Rainbow 6 ticket with the winners of all six races. The payoff on July 16 was $164,483.32
