GP West Handle Up 8.8 Percent on Florida-Bred Stakes Day

HorseracingFLA Staff Report

The Gulfstream Park West meet will have ten races this afternoon, including five on turf, with first post time of 12:35 p.m.

None of today’s races are stakes.

But there will be lingering excitement from Saturday’s eight-stakes Sunshine Millions Preview day card, where there was a continuation of this year’s rising handle at the meet being held at Calder Casino & Race Course.

All-sources handle was up 8.8 percent on Saturday, compared with last year’s Sunshine Millions Preview.

That wagering was $5,684,886 on Saturday–compared with $5,223,848 on Nov. 7, 2014 according to Equibase charts. The all-sources numbers are a combination of bets made on GP West races on-track, at other tracks and simulcast locations and through Internet and phone betting services.

On both days, there were ten races. Both days had eight $100,000 stakes races for Florida breds. Breakdowns of live and off-site handle were not available.

This year, as in 2014 Gulfstream Park is holding the GP West meet at Calder under a lease agreement with that track.

Preliminary research indicates that all-sources handle for GP West is up more than 20 percent this year for the 40-day meet that will end on Nov. 28.
